Why gutters matter to your roof

Most people think of gutters as a separate thing from the roof. They are really the last part of the roof system. Every drop of rain that hits your shingles has to go somewhere, and the gutters are supposed to carry it away from the house.

When gutters clog, sag, or pull loose, that water backs up or spills in the wrong spot. Over time it can soak the roof edge, rot the fascia boards, stain siding, and pool next to the foundation. Fall is when this shows up most around here, because oaks and poplars in Cherokee, Cobb, and Pickens counties drop a lot of leaves in a short window.

Signs your gutters are causing problems

You can spot most of these from the ground. Please do not climb a ladder or get on the roof to check.

Water pouring over the sides during a hard rain instead of out the downspouts. Gutters that sag, lean away from the house, or have gaps between sections. Peeling paint, dark stains, or soft spots on the fascia board right behind the gutter. Plants or moss growing in the gutter line. Wet spots, washed out mulch, or puddles along the foundation after a storm. Stains on the ceiling or walls near an outside wall, which can mean water is getting in at the roof edge.

How bad gutters lead to roof damage

When a gutter is full, water has nowhere to go but back toward the house. It can wick up under the bottom row of shingles and into the roof deck along the edge. That wood stays wet, softens, and eventually rots. It is one of the more common spots we find hidden damage.

Heavy, clogged gutters also pull on the fascia. Once the fascia gets soft, the gutter loosens even more, and the problem speeds up. What starts as a clog can end up being a roof edge repair if it sits long enough.

Clean, repair, or replace?

If your gutters are in good shape and just full of leaves, a cleaning may be all you need. Keeping them clear once or twice a fall goes a long way.

New gutters start to make sense when sections are sagging or separating, seams leak no matter how many times they get sealed, the gutters are undersized for your roof, or water keeps landing in the wrong place. Older homes sometimes have gutters that were never sized or pitched right in the first place.

If you are planning a roof replacement, it is a smart time to look at gutters too. Doing both together means the drip edge, roof edge, and gutters all get set up to work with each other.

What a good gutter install looks like

Gutters should be sized for how much water your roof sheds, pitched slightly so water runs toward the downspouts, and hung securely so they stay put under weight. Downspouts should move water away from the foundation, not dump it right beside it.

We install new gutters on homes and commercial buildings across Canton, Woodstock, Holly Springs, Ball Ground, and nearby towns. We can look at your gutters and the roof edge behind them in the same visit, so you know if there is anything else going on.
