Pine Needles, Wet Leaves, and Roof Valleys: Why North Georgia Roofs Leak in November

November in Cherokee County means pine needles and wet leaves piling up in roof valleys. Here is why that debris causes leaks, what to look for, and how to get ahead of it before winter.

Why November is rough on roof valleys

A roof valley is the spot where two slopes of your roof meet and form a V. It's built to move a lot of water fast. That also makes it the place where everything that falls on your roof ends up.

Around Canton, Woodstock, and Holly Springs we've got a lot of tall pines and hardwoods. By November the needles and leaves are coming down hard, and they slide right into the valleys and pile up behind chimneys.

What wet debris actually does to shingles

Dry leaves usually blow off. Wet ones don't. Once they soak up rain, they mat down and hold water against the shingles for days.

That trapped moisture wears down the granules, grows moss and algae, and can start to soften the shingles. Worse, a thick pile can act like a little dam. During a steady fall rain, water backs up behind it and works its way sideways under the shingle edges and into the underlayment.

Behind a chimney, the same thing happens against the flashing. Water sits there, finds a gap, and runs down into the attic.

Signs debris is already causing a problem

Dark streaks or green moss running down a valley.

Piles of needles that never seem to wash off, even after a big rain.

Gutters overflowing right at the bottom of a valley.

A stain on the ceiling or a damp spot in the attic near where two roof lines meet or under the chimney.

Soft or spongy feel at the low end of a valley (we check this, please don't walk your roof to find out).

What you can do from the ground

Keep an eye on your valleys from the yard after a storm. If you see a mat of leaves sitting there, it's worth getting it cleared.

Trim back branches that hang over the roof. Less debris falling means less to clean up, and fewer limbs to come down in a winter wind storm.

Keep your gutters clear so water coming out of the valleys has somewhere to go. A clogged gutter at the bottom of a valley pushes water right back up under the shingles.

Why get it checked before winter

A wet valley in November can turn into a frozen one in January. When that water freezes and thaws over and over, it pries at the shingles and flashing and makes a small gap bigger.

Catching it now usually means a simple cleanup or a small repair. Waiting can mean wet decking, stained drywall, and soaked insulation.
